What is JoSAA?

JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the official centralised admission process run by the Government of India for seats in IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology), and other Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs) across India. Admission is based on JEE Advanced rank (for IITs) and JEE Main rank (for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs). JoSAA conducts 6 rounds of seat allotment — students must register and fill choices on the official JoSAA portal to participate.

About This Data

Cutoff ranks are OPEN category JoSAA 2025 seat allotment data — both Opening Rank and Closing Rank for all 6 rounds. Select a quota and gender combination to view the relevant cutoffs. Ranks are JEE CRL (Common Rank List); lower rank = better score.

Understanding JoSAA 2025 Cutoff Ranks

The JoSAA cutoff rank (closing rank) is the last JEE rank at which a seat in a specific institute, program and quota was allotted in a given round of seat allocation. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts centralised seat allotment for IITs, NITs, IIITs and Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs) on behalf of the Ministry of Education.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Select an Institute Type (IIT / NIT / IIIT / GFTI) — data loads only for the selected type.
  2. Optionally narrow down by Institute name and Program.
  3. Select a Round to see that round's opening & closing ranks, or keep "All Rounds" to compare all 6 rounds side by side.
  4. Set Quota (AI is most common) and Gender to match your eligibility.
  5. Enter your JEE Rank to highlight safe and risky options.

Key Differences: IIT vs NIT Quotas

IIT (All Rounds)
Only AI (All India) quota — one national merit list for all IITs. No state quota.
NIT / IIIT / GFTI
Both AI and HS/OS quotas. 50% seats reserved for Home State candidates; remaining 50% are Other State (OS).

JoSAA Cutoff Ranks – Frequently Asked Questions

With a JEE Advanced rank of 5,000, you can get into several newer IITs for branches like Electrical, Chemical, and Civil Engineering. For older IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur), most branches except Metallurgy/Mining will be out of reach. For NIT admissions using JEE Main rank 5,000, you're competitive for top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal) for ECE/Mechanical via Home State quota. Use the IIT/NIT filter above to see specific cutoffs.

AI (All India): Open to candidates from any state — used for IITs and 50% of NIT/IIIT seats. HS (Home State): 50% of NIT/IIIT seats reserved for students from the institute's home state — cutoffs are more relaxed. OS (Other State): Remaining 50% open to students from other states. Home State quota gives a significant advantage — a rank of 15,000 OS might get you the same branch as rank 25,000 HS at many NITs.

JoSAA runs 6 rounds of seat allotment. In each round, students who have been allotted a seat can float (upgrade), freeze (keep), or exit. Seats freed by upgrades and withdrawals become available in the next round, often allowing lower-ranked candidates to get seats. Round 6 cutoffs are almost always higher (more relaxed) than Round 1. If you missed your target in Round 1, don't give up — monitor Round 2–6 actively.

The top NITs for CSE based on placement records and NIRF rankings are NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal (NITK), NIT Calicut, and NIT Rourkela. NIT Trichy CSE (OS quota) typically closes around rank 3,000–5,000 in Round 1. NIT Warangal and NITK are similarly competitive. Use the filter (Institute Type → NIT, Program → CSE) to see all NIT CSE cutoffs side by side.

The current data shows OPEN category cutoffs. JoSAA also publishes separate cutoffs for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and EWS categories. Reserved category cutoffs are always numerically higher (less competitive). For OBC-NCL candidates, cutoffs are typically 2–3x the OPEN cutoff. For SC/ST, seats are often available even at IITs for ranks 20,000–50,000+. Refer to the official JoSAA portal for category-wise data.

Fill 20–30+ choices in order of preference. Start with your dream college/branch, then gradually add safer options. Include both AI and HS/OS quota variants. Use Round 1 cutoffs as a reach target and Round 3–6 cutoffs for safe choices. Never leave choices unfilled — you can always upgrade in later rounds. Avoid picking only top choices with no backups, as you may end up without a seat if cutoffs don't relax.
