Question 8

What are the key differences between JEE Main Session 1 and Session 2?

Accepted Answer

Both sessions have the same paper; you can take one or both, and your better NTA score is used for ranking. In recent cycles NTA has held Session 1 in January, an early attempt before boards, and Session 2 in April, a second shot after boards. Most serious aspirants register for both. Live 2027 dates are on our JEE Main page.

Question 9

How do I prioritize between JEE Main and institute-specific exams like BITSAT, VITEEE?

Accepted Answer

Prepare for JEE Main first. BITSAT, VITEEE, MET and SRMJEEE test the same Class 11–12 PCM base, so JEE preparation carries over. Each needs its own application and fee, with deadlines spread from winter to spring, so register for two or three realistic backups based on your mock scores. Question 10

How does the Home State quota work in NIT admissions?

Accepted Answer

NIT seats are split into Home State and Other State quotas. Your home state is the state where you first appeared for Class 12, not your native place or address. You compete for Home State seats only at the NIT in that state, and for Other State seats everywhere else, so closing ranks differ by quota. Compare both on our JoSAA cutoffs page.

Question 11

What JEE rank do I need for an NIT, IIIT or IIT?

Accepted Answer

There is no single cutoff: it depends on the institute, branch, category, gender pool and quota. The best guide is the previous year's JoSAA opening and closing ranks. NITs, IIITs and GFTIs allot seats on your JEE Main rank, while IITs use your JEE Advanced rank. Check last year's ranks with our JoSAA cutoffs and college predictor.

Question 12

Can I get into BITS Pilani, VIT, or Manipal without clearing JEE?

Accepted Answer

Yes. BITS Pilani admits through BITSAT and does not use JEE scores; it also gives direct admission to first-rank holders of central and state boards. VIT and Manipal (MAHE) run their own tests, VITEEE and MET. See dates on the BITSAT, VITEEE and MET pages.

Question 13

Who can register for JEE Advanced, and what if I miss the deadline?

Accepted Answer

Only the top 2,50,000 JEE Main Paper 1 candidates (split by category) can register, in a short window of roughly ten days after JEE Main Session 2 results. Registration is online at jeeadv.ac.in only; if you miss the final deadline, you cannot sit JEE Advanced that year. Watch the JEE Advanced page for the 2027 window.

Question 14

Is it worth waiting for CSAB rounds if I didn't get a seat in JoSAA?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes. CSAB Special rounds run after JoSAA to fill vacant seats in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, and closing ranks there can be lower than in JoSAA. They need a separate registration and fee, and accepting a seat means paying an admission fee under CSAB's refund rules, so read the CSAB business rules before you register.

Question 15

Does the 75% Class 12 rule apply to droppers, and can I fix it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs you need 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a place in your board's top 20 percentile. Droppers can sit a board improvement exam: improving one or more subjects can get you to 75%, but the top-20-percentile route needs improvement in all subjects. You can still take JEE without meeting it.

Question 16

How many attempts are allowed for JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

Accepted Answer

JEE Main: you can appear in the year you take Class 12 and the two years after it, with two sessions a year, so up to six attempts. JEE Advanced: a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years. Droppers should plan both JEE Advanced attempts from their first year.

Question 17

How does JoSAA counselling work for IIT/NIT seat allotment?

Accepted Answer

JoSAA allots seats in IITs, IISc, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs over several rounds (five in 2026) using your JEE ranks and your ordered choices. After each allotment you must choose Freeze, Float or Slide, complete online reporting and pay the seat acceptance fee (₹30,000; ₹15,000 for SC, ST and PwD in 2026). Missing a step in a round forfeits your seat and further JoSAA participation.

Question 18

When will engineering entrance exam dates for 2028 and 2029 be announced?

Accepted Answer

Engineering entrance exams follow a fixed annual cycle. JEE Main registration for the January session has opened around late October or November of the preceding year, while state CETs such as KCET, MHT CET and WBJEE usually notify early in the exam year. Expect the same pattern for the 2028 and 2029 cycles. Verified dates are added to the engineering exams hub soon after each official notification.
