Law Admissions 2027: Frequently Asked Questions
After results, the Consortium of NLUs runs centralised online counselling in several rounds. You register, rank NLUs in order of preference and receive allotments based on your CLAT rank, category and preferences. To keep an allotted seat you pay a confirmation fee and choose Freeze (accept it and leave counselling) or Float (keep it but stay eligible for a higher preference). See the CLAT page.
CLAT 2027 is used by 26 National Law Universities, including NLSIU Bengaluru, NALSAR Hyderabad and WBNUJS Kolkata. NLU Delhi does not take CLAT; it admits through its own exam, AILET. Many private and state universities also accept CLAT scores, so check each college's admission notice.
Prepare together. Both test English, current affairs and logical reasoning at a similar level, so most preparation carries over. Use the official CLAT syllabus as your base, then practise AILET-style papers and check its section weightage in the official notification. Both exams are held in December, a week apart in the current cycle.
You still have strong options. Follow every CLAT counselling round, because seats move as candidates upgrade or exit. Apply to exams with separate merit lists: AILET, SLAT (Symbiosis), NMIMS LAT and state tests such as MH CET Law. Private law schools also run their own admission tests, so check their notices.
Yes, if you are fairly sure about law. The 5-year integrated LLB (such as BA LLB) is the only law degree open right after Class 12, through CLAT, AILET and state law CETs. NLUs add strong peer networks and campus recruitment. If you are unsure, you can take any degree first, because the 3-year LLB needs a bachelor's degree. Both lead to the same right to practise.
MH CET Law (Maharashtra, including ILS Pune and GLC Mumbai), AP LAWCET, TS LAWCET and KLEE (Kerala). They fill state government and private law college seats at much lower fees than private universities. Dates are added as each state announces them.
Apply online on the Consortium of NLUs website. The fee is ₹4,000 (General/OBC) or ₹3,500 (SC/ST/BPL/PwD). CLAT 2027 is an offline (pen-and-paper) exam held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Check the CLAT page for the live application deadline and exam date.
Any stream works: Science, Commerce and Arts students are all eligible. You need at least 45% marks in Class 12 (40% for SC, ST and PwD). There is no upper age limit for the UG programme, and students appearing for Class 12 in March/April 2027 can apply, provided they show proof of passing at admission.
Fees vary by NLU and by state domicile; each NLU publishes its fee structure in its brochure on the Consortium website. Private law universities are generally more expensive than NLUs, so compare the full 5-year cost, including hostel. Many NLUs offer fee waivers or scholarships for students from low-income families.
Corporate law at law firms and in-house legal teams; litigation in trial courts, High Courts and the Supreme Court; judiciary through state judicial service exams (check each High Court's notification for any minimum-practice rule); and policy, research and public service. To practise in court you must enrol with a State Bar Council and clear the AIBE.
CLAT is held in December of the year before admission. In the current cycle, registration opened in early August for an early-December exam, and AILET followed in mid-December.
