Nursing Admissions 2027: Frequently Asked Questions
Apply to both if you're eligible. AIIMS B.Sc (Hons) Nursing is open to female candidates only. It has its own entrance exam and needs 55% in English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology together (50% for SC/ST). Admission does not guarantee a job. Other routes are state entrance tests, NEET UG for Military Nursing Service and some central institutes (counselled by MCC), and institute exams like PGIMER.
Not always. The Indian Nursing Council (INC) requires B.Sc Nursing selection through an entrance test. The qualifying level is the 50th percentile (40th for SC/ST/OBC), but who conducts the test varies. NEET UG is used for Military Nursing Service and some central institutes counselled by MCC. AIIMS, PGIMER and CMC Ludhiana hold their own exams, and many states run their own. See the nursing exams hub.
It is competitive because seats are limited. Each AIIMS has a fixed intake listed in the prospectus (for example, AIIMS Delhi listed 96 B.Sc (Hons) Nursing seats in 2025). Applicant numbers aren't published in a consistent official form, so treat any ratio you see online with caution. No. INC requires Class 12 in Science with at least 45% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology together, plus a pass in English. If you don't have PCB, ANM (a 2-year course) needs only a recognised Class 12 pass under INC norms, but it is open to female candidates only. Check the state or institute prospectus for any extra conditions.
AIIMS B.Sc (Hons) Nursing: AIIMS has tentatively scheduled the exam for late June 2027, and registration opens a few months earlier (AIIMS Nursing). PGIMER and CMC Ludhiana run their own exams, with 2027 dates TBA (PGIMER, CMC Ludhiana). Military Nursing Service shortlists on NEET UG (Army Nursing). State colleges use state tests or counselling.
Each country has its own regulator. UK: the Nursing and Midwifery Council requires a two-part test of competence (a CBT, then an OSCE in the UK) and IELTS Academic or OET. USA: state boards require the NCLEX-RN, a credentials review and an English test. Gulf countries, Australia and others have separate licensing. Check the official regulator's site before paying any agency.
Most B.Sc Nursing programmes admit on merit, and INC's B.Sc Nursing eligibility rules don't restrict gender. Some routes are female-only, though. AIIMS B.Sc (Hons) Nursing and ANM admit only women. Before applying, check each institute's prospectus for gender eligibility and seat distribution.

Nursing has a clear path from B.Sc to M.Sc, teaching and specialist roles, with licensing routes abroad. Apply to several exams on the nursing hub rather than waiting on one result.
ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife): a 2-year course for women, aimed at community and primary health work. GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery): a 3-year diploma (cut from 3½ years in 2015-16). B.Sc Nursing: a 4-year degree that leads to M.Sc Nursing and teaching roles. GNM holders can upgrade through the 2-year Post Basic B.Sc Nursing.
Only when each institute publishes its notice. In recent cycles, AIIMS, PGIMER and CMC Ludhiana opened B.Sc Nursing registration between March and June, with exams in June–July. State exams usually fall in the first half of the year. Nothing for 2028 or 2029 is official yet. The nursing hub is updated as each notification is released.
